We’re proud to launch our Trans Youth Manifesto
The UK goes to the polls on the 4th of July to elect a new government, with issues affecting trans people likely to be a polarised talking point. But the voices of trans young people are missing from so many from these conversations. Their opinions and experiences are all too often overlooked and ignored by those in power.
Developed by trans young people, for trans young people, our Trans Youth Manifesto calls on our future government to listen to the needs and wants of our community.
A call for a world where trans people can thrive
Trans young people’s message for our politicians is clear: they want to feel safe, welcome and protected, and to live in a world where they are celebrated, not debated.
We look forward to working with whoever is in power on July 5th to make that happen, and continuing our mission to build a better world to grow up trans.
How we developed the Trans Youth Manifesto
One of our Youth Advisory Panel members, Ellie (they/them), developed this manifesto in collaboration with our Policy and Advocacy team.
Ellie undertook research modelled around two core research questions:
- What do transgender young people in the UK want and need from a future government?
- What kind of future do transgender young people in the UK want to live in?
We collected data from multiple sources:
- Three focus groups.
- An online questionnaire
- An Instagram survey
282 people contributed to the research. We received a wide variety of feedback and submissions, from conversations, to poems and drawings. We collated all of this into the finished manifesto, which you can view at the top of this page.
Three key asks
This manifesto calls on a future government to:
- Prioritise safety and support for trans youth in education,
- Provide affordable and timely access to gender affirming healthcare,
- Respect the existence and humanity of trans young people.
