Volunteer with us!

Volunteers are vitally important to Mermaids and the work we do. We simply couldn’t offer the support we give without the commitment and dedication of our amazing volunteers.

Why volunteer?

Our volunteers are making a difference and changing lives every day and developing valuable skills and experience along the way. Volunteering can be a really rewarding and worthwhile experience. Every minute of your time will help make a difference. However you choose to volunteer, you’ll be part of a friendly community working together to support gender diverse young people and their families.

I am really proud to volunteer at Mermaids. Seeing the positive impact our support offers young people and their families makes it so worthwhile. From a personal point of view, it is great to feel like you are giving something back and making even a small difference.”

Volunteer with local groups since 2018

What support do we give our volunteers?

It’s important to us to get to know our volunteers. Everyone goes through an application process, including reference checks and an enhanced DBS/PVG (if the role involves working with young people). An induction and role specific training are provided so all volunteers feel confident and ready for their tasks. We also give ongoing support, supervision and opportunities to be part of our volunteering community.

What do Mermaids volunteers do?

Our volunteers contribute their time in a variety of roles. Here are some examples of what our wonderful volunteers do.

Local Groups

Local groups provide a safe space for families to get together, make friends and offer each other support. As our work has expanded, so has the demand for these local groups around the country. Volunteers work as a team to facilitate a group, focussed on providing a welcoming space for people to meet, share thoughts and experiences, while gaining support.

Events

Our events team works to embrace, educate and empower gender diverse young people and their families by hosting a variety of events. This includes weekend residentials, collaborating with organisations to raise awareness of transgender issues and celebrating what it is to be transgender at Pride festivals across the UK.

Helpline

Quite simply, our helpline service couldn’t function as well as it does, and meet the demand it does, without our team of amazing volunteers! Our volunteers are fully trained for taking calls and web chats, offering up at least three hours a month to support the young people, parents and professionals that contact us for support.

Volunteering with Mermaids helped me to gain my sense of self again, rejuvenating my work skills and giving me the opportunity to help others. The helpline is a marvellous volunteering opportunity which helps Mermaids to support others.
