Hi, my name’s John and I work on Mermaids’ support line. I’m a non-binary trans man living in Staffordshire with my fiancée. I love reading and listening to podcasts, especially if they are about history and folklore! My co-workers know me as the one with lots of Oodies (a type of wearable, hooded blanket) they joke that I have one for every day of the week!  

I remember when I was eighteen someone asked me what my dream job was. I said it would be working for an LGBTQ+ organisation but that it would probably never happen.

Around Christmas 2020 I saw an advert for a job at Mermaids, working on what was then called the helpline. I applied and was ecstatic to be accepted. I started in January 2021 and I’ve been here ever since!  

From today, we have renamed our helpline, a support line.

The word ‘help’ makes me think of flashing lights, sirens and a sense of urgency. Some might say it even suggests victimhood. That’s not what we’re about.  

Mermaids’ support line is a safe space where you can expect a listening, non-judgemental ear. We can give you information and a place to talk, to empower you to make the right choices. We never offer advice or tell you what to do. Some people think you have to be in crisis to call us, but you absolutely don’t.  

You can just call for a chat or to ask about practical things, like a deed poll to change your name. For me, the term helpline implies that we’ll do something concrete for you…which may explain why someone once rang to order fish and chips!  

As a trans person, it’s important to me that we recognise that being trans is not always something you need help with. Being trans is joyful, it is inspiring and sometimes it can also come with challenges.

Whatever you are feeling right now, we’re here to listen. Your journey is unique, and our support line will meet you where you’re at.
