Our volunteers contribute their time in a variety of roles – Here are some examples of the work you could do for Mermaids:
We need more volunteers to help us to provide a quality service, with a 2 day training course and supervision and support provided. We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 to 3 hours per week.
Email support service:
Answer emails from a variety of different sources, responding with information, signposting to resources and organisations plus offering emotional support and opportunities for parents and young people to access Mermaids other services. Training, supervision and support is given, and we ask for a minimum commitment of 2 to 3 hours per week.
Teens and parents groups moderations and checks:
All new members of the forums are checked thoroughly and then ongoing moderation of posts is provided. Could you help us with this? Training, supervision and support is provided, and we ask for an hour a day as this post needs to be responsive.
Weekend and day events/groups volunteers:
We need people to help with catering, cleaning up, supporting the Mermaids staff and volunteers at events spread out throughout the year including Prides, our residential weekends, our local groups and other events.
We need more local groups around the country for parents and young people to get together. Training, support and supervision is given. Meetings are once a month, often weekends, to allow for parents to bring children and young people with them. We look for spaces with at least 2 rooms to allow some privacy.
Weekend residential volunteers:
It’s all hands on deck at the weekend residentials, so we need people with a ‘can do’ attitude to help out with everything from washing up, cooking and shifting furniture to running workshops and entertainment.
We are often approached by professional and community organisations for speakers to share their experiences to educate and empower their audiences. We’d love to hear from you if you’re confident at speaking to a crowd and happy to share your story.
Pride stall volunteers:
We love being at Prides and try to represent our families at as many as possible, but we need a veritable army of volunteers to run them for us! We can deal with the admin and send you all the resources you need.
