Our volunteers contribute their time in a variety of roles – Here are some examples of the work you could do for Mermaids:
We are always looking for enthusiastic new volunteers to help us provide a quality service. Those working across our helpline platforms must first attend a 2-day training course and supervision with support provided. We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 to 3 hours per week from our volunteers and the work is hugely rewarding. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Email support service:
Our volunteers answer emails from a variety of different sources, responding with useful information, signposting to resources and organisations & offering emotional support. There are also opportunities for parents and young people to access Mermaids’ other services. Training, supervision & support are given, & we ask for a minimum commitment of 2 to 3 hours per week.
Teens and parents groups moderation:
All new members of the private forums are checked thoroughly for the privacy & security of those chatting on the groups. There is ongoing moderation of posts provided thereafter to ensure users are abiding by our forum guidelines. Training, supervision and support are provided, and we ask for an hour a day as this work is responsive.
We need more local groups around the country for parents and young people to get together. Training, support and supervision is given. Meetings are once a month, often weekends, to allow for parents to bring children and young people with them. We look for spaces with at least 2 rooms to allow some privacy.
Volunteering with Mermaids helped me to gain my sense of self again, rejuvenating my work skills and giving me the opportunity to help others. The helpline is a marvelous volunteering opportunity which helps Mermaids to support others.Kerry
