Police forces are being currently contacted by a reporter for details about delivery of our trans awareness and support training.

Mermaids is happy to be proactive in placing this information fully into the public domain, to inform public discussion. The media policy of Mermaids continues to be for all information to made publicly and freely available where possible, rather than the preserve of any one media organisation.

We are happy to confirm that we have delivered into Merseyside and West Yorkshire Police Forces, and we can confirm representatives from other forces were also present at the Merseyside sessions.

Feedback from the sessions has been unilaterally positive.  Here are some quotes:

"I went to see the Mermaids presentation a couple of weeks ago and just wanted to give some positive feedback. I would honestly say it is one of the most informative and interesting presentations I’ve been to whilst being in Merseyside Police. The presenter was brilliant and kept things light-hearted whilst at the same time managed to reinforce the difficulties transgender people face now and have faced in the past"I hope it continues to be rolled out as I believe it is necessary in modern day policing for all officers to be educated around issues that the transgender community are faced with every day. Police officers need to be able show understanding empathy and compassion for victims of hate crime and I believe this training assists them in doing this."

"I just wanted to drop you an e-mail and express how fantastic I thought the training course was yesterday I really found it interesting and very informative and very well delivered by you both."

"I found the afternoon to be very powerful and moving and one training event I will not forget. Thanks to the training I was able to refer a family to Mermaids on Tuesday 15th Jan and found making the referral easy. They spoke to Mum whilst in station and Mum left station with a positive impression having felt she was listened to by both Police and Mermaids."

"Just to say thank you for yesterday’s training re: mermaids. It was great and very informative. I am going to see if I can get [ . ] our to deliver training to the rest of our teams."

If any other forces are organisations are interested in training on increasing understanding and awareness of the unique challenges faced by trans youth and adults, please email us on training@mermaidsuk.org.uk
